We need to talk about central courtyards

In our humble opinion, central courtyards are one of the underrated gems of home design. We love central courtyards as a unique and beautiful addition to the home that maximises natural light and promotes indoor-outdoor living. If you’re looking for a unique and visually stunning addition to your home, then a central courtyard might just be the answer. A central courtyard is essentially a small, open-air space in the centre of a home. It can be designed in many different styles and can include features like water features, landscaping, seating areas, and even outdoor kitchens. These courtyards bring light and air into the home, making it feel more spacious and inviting. While they are becoming increasingly popular in modern homes, central courtyards are still largely underrated in Western countries and overlooked by homeowners when designing a new home.

The central courtyard is a feature found in many cultures and throughout history as far back as 3000BC, from Egypt to Greece to Rome. The central courtyard regained popularity in the 19th and 20th centuries in residential architecture. The courtyard was used as a space for family activities, and provided a private oasis in urban areas. We think that their recent resurgence in Western countries stems from the ever growing popularity of Japanese design philosophies.

Central courtyards are a common feature in traditional Japanese homes and serve as an integral part of the design of many houses. They are often used as a way to connect the indoor living spaces with the natural surroundings. Japanese courtyards are also often designed with careful consideration of the surrounding landscape, incorporating natural elements such as rocks, trees, and water features to create a sense of harmony between the home and its surroundings. Overall, the use of central courtyards in Japanese homes reflects a deep appreciation for nature and a desire to create spaces that promote a sense of peace and tranquility. The design and use of these courtyards have become an important part of Japanese architectural tradition and continue to inspire architects and homeowners around the world.

One of the biggest advantages of central courtyards is that they can be used year-round. They are perfect for outdoor entertaining in the warmer months, and they can also be used as a cozy indoor space during the colder months. With a little creativity and the right design elements, your central courtyard can become a true oasis in your home. A skilled interior design studio can help you create a central courtyard that perfectly fits your style and taste.
